Even though The Hush Sound is currently on a hiatus, nothing is stopping Greta Salpeter from making quality music. Her new solo project, Gold Motel, continues to build on the music of the Hush Sound that fans have grown to love. Armed with strong vocals and various keyboard instruments, Salpeter demonstrates that she is a musical force to be reckoned with. The Gold Motel EP is a blend of indie pop that is ultimately irresistible.
The EP’s greatest attribute is its simplicity. While some may see this as a reason to detract from this release, there is no need for arena-sized hooks or overly flashy instrumental parts; Salpeter’s sweet voice and toe-tapping melodies are enough to retain the listener’s attention. Tracks such as “Make Me Stay” are quality offerings because of their catchy choruses and their carefree attitudes. These tracks are sure to brighten up anyone’s day. Towards the end of the album, the themes become darker; “Who Will I Be Tonight” and “Don’t Send the Searchlights” suggest a struggling relationship which ultimately culminates in separation. The former track is a nice ballad that really shines due to its barebones approach.
By the end of the Gold Motel EP, fans will be clamoring for a full-length record. Unfortunately, this EP, like this review, is short. Additionally, it might not get the recognition it deserves because of its December release date. However, Salpeter should be fully acknowledged for her splendid work in this release. With her first extended play, Greta Salpeter has proved that everything is just fine.
