2010 has so far been huge for New Jersey pop-rockers Action Item. The band opened up for the likes of Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, and Sean Kingston at Nassau Coliseum’s PopCon and toured the country on their own in support of such acts as Every Avenue, Between The Trees, and Amely. Now the band has returned from the studio armed with seven fresh tracks released in the form of The Stronger The Love EP, an effort which marks a newfound depth in Action Item’s songwriting ability.

The EP starts off with “When Everything Falls Back Down,” a piano laced track that serves as a great opener and the perfect bridge to the content of this EP. The song has many of the immediately catchy qualities of such Action Item fan favorites as “Dress For The Weather,” yet the lacing of piano throughout the track and the softer, more controlled, verses hint at the band’s slightly more sober sound found on much of this album. Lead singer Brian Cag leaves himself fittingly vulnerable on “Defenseless” and hopeful on “Somewhere Out There,” pianist Mark Shami proves his prowess on “Some Days” and “Satellite," while cellist/guitarist Anthony Li proves his versatility on "Home."

Unfortunately, to every general rule there is an anomaly, and on this EP it comes in the form of the second track, “Without You.” This song is a total complete black sheep, and its concerning to know that it made the final tracklist of the EP. The song trips upon its attempt at a funky, jazzy vibe and falls flat upon it’s face.

Overall, The Stronger The Love EP is a valiant effort that showcases growth from a band that has been getting buzz from both the scene and the mainstream. Vulnerability, optimism, and every emotion in between shines through over the space of just seven songs. Even the brief stumbling point cannot halt the EP’s momentum. This in itself speaks of the quality of Action Item’s songs. The future is bright for this band, let’s just hope that they continue to serve up the quality piano-rock that currently do.
