Rising quickly on the scene is the British group Asking Alexandria, with their unapologetically generic guitar riffs and even blander lyrics that seemed to catch the hearts of many in a very short time. But while this metalcore group accurately assumed just what the crowd wanted to hear for Stand Up and Scream, the Life Gone Wild EP meant to ease the gap between albums doesn’t quite deliver. Instead of a solid teaser to whet appetites for the second LP, what we hear is a hodge-podge of songs that seems put together to fill the length of an EP, and nothing more.

Starting the album is the track “Breathless”, one of the songs that will be featured on the new release Reckless and Relentless. With the intensely low growls and dissonant breakdowns, it sounds very similar to the new Miss May I and the likes. It has a powerful introduction, and hints at the band’s new direction in metal. To say that this is the best track of the EP doesn’t quite do it justice; rather, it is the only good track on it. Immediately following it are two Skid Row covers (“Youth Gone Wild” and “18 And Life”), which show an interesting side of the band, and obvious influence on vocal style, but still seem very out of place.

Also out of place is a rough demo of “I Was Once, Possible, Maybe, Perhaps a Cowboy King”, which seems unnecessary considering the fact that a perfectly good quality version exists on their debut. Again, this EP doesn’t have any substance to it, and is hardly appealing even for the die-hard Asking Alexandria fan. The remaining two songs are remixes of previous songs, which again leave the listener unsatisfied, and dare I say annoyed. A nice remix can be appreciated, but a bad one can ruin a good track, and discredit the one remixing it as well.

All that said, Life Gone Wild is basically a waste of time. I would encourage fans to hold out for their full-length, set to be released in early spring 2011. On the other hand, after listening to “Breathless”, perhaps one is better off simply steering clear from Asking Alexandria altogether.
