Standing on the backs of giants which musicians left the framework for years before, Broadway reinvent the sound that was perfected by bands like Story of the Year, From First To Last, and the recent I See Stars. Their blend of melodic vocal lines and heavily distorted guitar riffs, coupled with the occasional vocal scream makes Broadway’s Kingdoms all too familiar and refreshing nonetheless.

It’s sometimes hard to distinguish between the guitar solos and the vocalists’ leads as they fall in the same range. However, this is not something to scoff at, because it shows how professionally frontman Misha can carry a melody throughout distorted guitars.

Orlando is an interesting place to be musically in the late 2000's, as a short trip to the North is screamo/metalcore powerhouse Tallahassee, and just to the South is pop-punk haven Miami. Broadway sits somewhere in the middle, where a close listen would really exemplify the metal roots, and a casual listener would be content enough to dance to the playful vocal melodies that appear on seemingly every track. They do, however, have a unique sound accomplished by very heartfelt, intimate bridges towards the end of most songs. In contrast to other Florida bands who push the tempo for the entire 4 minute song, Broadway take the ample time to slow down and create buildup and tension in their closing portions of songs.

Most skillful is Broadway at accompanying a steady underlying structure with playful melodies. Especially in the ascending chorus to "Meg Ryan Would Play You in the Movie," Broadway creates a catchy hook simply by mimicking the guitar parts in unexpected tempo throughout the song. And while the beginning of "Gotta’ Love That Southern Charm" might seem a little abrasive with the dissonant, squealing guitars, the lone vocal line that kick-starts the song sticks with the listener.

While it has been a number of years since we’ve heard something quite like Broadway, it does instinctually omit a familiar appreciation for high-pitched vocals alongside metal guitar riffs. In a time where music was seemingly much better and skillful, Broadway has taken this author back in time while still providing a new and exciting timbre to the genre.

There are at least three bands with this name:

"Broadway(FL) burst back into the scene in 2007 with the release of their self titled EP. Recorded and produced by Lee Dyess (From First to Last,Chasing Victory, Mayday Parade) the cd showcases the many sides of the band. The powerful drums are the backbone to the cd, and the guitars and vocals can only be described as melodic yet intense. The EP is lined with music that goes from a beautiful masterpiece, to a creative and unique destruction in a matter of seconds, all while somehow keeping the focus on the catchy vocals.
