Having to satiate the needs of an entire fan base after a drama filled exit from his previous band, Craig Owens’ new project, D.R.U.G.S., is finally a finished product. The release marks the final step in allowing the world to make its harshest of judgments and pick sides on the matter if they so choose. D.R.U.G.S. is the culmination of a powerful list of musicians with a resume that kills -- and kill it does.

Owens’ vampiric blood lust for revenge rushes out the gate in opener “If You Think This Song Is About You, It Probably Is” with its obvious slight towards his ex-band mates. Not to outdo himself in the first two and a half minutes, the album continues on with a lyrical fervency that includes “I knew as soon as I’d left you’d go and fuck someone else you whore.” Subtlety is not the name of the game this time around. Owens weaves his way through his lines as easily as ever and his voice continues to go up like an angel and down like a hawk with little surprise on his melodic choices considering the similar vein of musicianship. Even the radio-ready “I’m Here To Take The Sky” comes with a Cinematic Sunrise taste on its tongue with a dose of easily digestible lyrics like “I’m going to live my life, take chances, full of hope and new romances.”

Not outshining his band mates in the least, Matt Good (From First To Last) and Nick Martin (Underminded) attack with equanimity. “Stop Reading, Start Doing Pushups” sees D.R.U.G.S. at its heaviest as it lays into harsh riffs and scruffy vocal lines. Nick Martin even opens “My Swagger Has A First Name” with a dose of well-crafted screams brining Underminded fans back in for a treat. Layering many of the tracks are a solid sprinkling of electronics courtesy of Matt Good. Hopping on current trends, “Mr. Owl Ate My Metal Worm” spends its bridge backed by the dubstep wobble so many adore or loathe. Most of the beauty on the record is found in its subtleties not heard until headphones are used, which is something of concern. The mix puts too much pressure on the drums, which do have a beautiful, crisp tone and Owens’ vocal lines while often leaving the intricacies behind.

After all is said and done, post-hardcore still got two records out of this ordeal. D.R.U.G.S shows promise in their first offering with a solid dose of everything to expect from these musicians with a sprinkle of new direction that will hopefully be explored in the future. If all goes well, Owens will do more poetic justice to the lyrics next time, also. For a first offering, it’s nothing short of a success.
