It’s amazing that Escape the Fate is still a band.  Honestly, after the departure of Ronnie Radke, it looked as if the band was destined to fail.  Enter Craig Mabbitt, formerly of Blessthefall, and the band seemed reinvigorated.  However, with a new vocalist, there seemed a new attitude as well.  Sure, the band were trying to be rock stars before Mabbitt joined (just check out the sex-driven, “Hot For Teacher”-esque video for Situations), but after Mabbitt joined, the rock star image really became prevalent.  Skip ahead to 2010, and Escape the Fate are back with their eponymous third album, which is supposedly “the cure for the modern day music epidemic” (those are bassist Max Green’s words, not mine).

Sorry to say it, but this album is not a cure for anything.  The songs range from straight-up rock songs, to Atreyu rip-offs, making the third full length from Escape the Fate quite bland.  After the electronic-fueled opener “Choose Your Fate,” the Atreyu comparisons begin on first single “Massacre,” with Mabbitt screaming throughout the song until the chorus kicks in, and also features a breakdown in the vein of A Day To Remember.  Tracks such as “Issues,” “Gorgeous Nightmare,” and “City of Sin” sound like tracks you would expect to hear on alternative rock radio.  “Prepare Your Weapon” is a decent track, which allows drummer Robert Ortiz (who looks eerily like Slash) to show off his skills behind the kit.

“World Around Me” a piano driven power ballad, shows a softer side of the band before kicking in to the albums finale, which also happens to be the best track on the album.  “The Aftermath (The Guillotine, Part III),” while still sounding like Atreyu, is the hardest hitting track on the album, featuring the deep screams that Mabbitt used while in Blessthefall, and guitarist Monte Money shows he can make his guitar howl.

Is it an identity crisis or just a will to want to blatantly rip-off everyone from Queen (take a look at the album art.  Somewhere, Freddie Mercury is rolling over in his grave), to Atreyu?  Either way, there isn’t much good going on with this album.  Sure, it’ll please the bands legions of fans, and is sure to get the attention of those who still listen to the radio, but that’s the extent of it.  The scene is in a terrible state, and Escape the Fate are doing nothing to help revive it.
