For Today has been known for giving Christian Metal a good name. The lyrics vibrantly paint their faith, their work ethic is hard to beat, and the band does it not for their own glory, but give thanks to God for it all. Portraits, their last release, was a uniquely themed album, putting together a collage of Biblical characters. With their newest release Breaker, the band has a more 'offensive' spirit, inciting believers to action.

Spotting Breaker is a series of little interludes, titled "The Breaker's ____". Consequently, the album opens with "The Breaker's Origin", a monologue of sorts that paints the picture of a broken man. Immediately following is the track "Devastator", a song that heralds God as a warrior in battle; "let my name be feared at the gates of Hell". The words are both uplifting and victorious, and Christians everywhere can appreciate the words, if not the music. Though the album is lyrically geared towards Christian metalheads, it is also musically rich, with intense guitar sweeping and emotional riffs. This is best seen in the song "King", where the guitar lick gives the song a regal and sacred feel, fitting the ever-popular phrase "long live the King".

This album is definitely a step up from Portraits, both in production and in technicality. Breaker has a heavier feel to it, with bass drops and breakdowns accenting a vocalist who puts his all into what he does, from the yells to the high screams and growls. However, the risk a metal band runs when attempting to go the heavy route is going dry. It is not after too long that the bass drops and breakdowns become increasingly repetitive and predictable. To be sure, For Today has made great attempts at preventing Breaker from being another chug-chug album (the track Seraphim, for example, takes the listener on a journey, from one riff to another, and then back to the first to give a satisfactory closure), but there are points when, to the untrained ear, the album seems to drone on and get boring.

The interlude/monologues seem at times to hinder the pace of the album, but they instead set the pace and mood of the album, moving from the offensive to the worshipful stance, with a wonderful closing track "The Breaker's Commission". There are also several guest appearances that give a nice variety to what could be a boring release:  Drew York of Stray From the Path, Shane Raymond of Close Your Eyes, and Jay Pepito of Reign Supreme.

Overall, Breaker might seem like just another metal release, with expected bass drops and breakdowns, but the words and music go beyond technical skill. It highlights the school of thought that "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" (Leonardo Da Vinci). For Today have done a great job at praising God's name through metal, and continue to do so with this newest release.
