Guster's 6th release, Easy Wonderful, derives its sounds from the band's last two releases. The band has always been comfortable with small amounts of change or progression - if you listen to 1995's Parachute back-to-back with Easy Wonderful, you'd hear many of the same melodies, progressions, and lyrical themes, but with better production and more electric instruments on the latter album. But since the band's apex on their third release, Lost and Gone Forever, Guster hasn't taken many detours, settling down to produce an adult-alternative brand of indie pop/rock.

Compared to Ganging Up on the Sun and Keep It Together, however, the highs aren't as high and the lows aren't as low, although the difference is barely noticeable. Some may call this easy-listening pop - and it is - but it's well-written easy-listening pop. Christmas chimes complement the singalong "Do You Love Me," while 60s-ish "woo-hoos" during "Bad Bad World" support the optimistic, carefree lyrics of "it isn't such a bad bad world" - a welcome slice of joy in a country rocked by political division, foreign wars, and an economic crisis.

But despite the pleasant buoyancy, much of the album feels second-rate. "This Could All Be Yours" is catchy, fun...and disconcertingly forgettable. "That's No Way to Get to Heaven" is 2+ minutes of blissful folk-pop, and yet few except for hardcore fans will find much to draw them in. "This Is How It Feels to Have a Broken Heart" is the worst track here, oxymoronically bright and peppy while stating the song's title to the listener. And frankly, "that's not love, what you call love" ("What You Call Love") is one of the most bland and useless lyrics of 2010.

Not to be too negative; this is certainly not poor-quality music. After 15 years, Guster know how to put out a decent album. But in the end, that's all Easy Wonderful is: decent. No part of the album is spectacular, and no part is garbage, but even by Guster's standards, this is only middle-of-the-road. There are as standard 12 iterations of two verses, a bridge, and three choruses; there are some gorgeous melodies, as well as a taste of Guster's greatest strength, their drumming.  There are some catchy singles. But what isn't there on Easy Wonderful is that necessary intangible that can simply be called "magic."
