It’s no wonder so many are hailing How To Dress Well’s creator Tom Krell the second coming of everything that is second coming’s – ever; what with his ominous appearance, insatiable appetite for creating the most lo-fi R&B possible, and great hair. No one should be surprised by this after all he was an incumbent to Pitchfork Media; this of course explains his great taste in clothing, music and hair. What is surprising is that all this talk may actually be worth it this time. Tom Krell has arrived, for the first time mind you, with something truly original. A release that solidifies him across a wide, a very wide, span of genres; nestled nicely with the likes of Bon Iver, Burial and The Microphones. Love Remains spurns new meaning to transcend platforms in music in the most unconventional of ways giving chase to the new voice of a generation.

The immediate difference here is the production. Consisting of several tracks from previous (free!) EP’s, Love Remains retains a sense of rawness through its tricky lo-fi technique. Splicing tracks like Untrue and fragmenting them with a soulful voice reminiscent of For Emma, Forever Ago; Tom Krell creates a heaping plate of artsy food that feels bigger than it is. That’s because the tracks hold no congregation. They’re devoid of any flow and thus manage to propagate a listen that can be enjoyed fully or partially – always the best meals. However the way in which the album was created does not bolster its worth like a few others mentioned earlier. The substance is what eschews the significance on Love Remains.

Song’s are constructed with intimacy in mind but are stripped of any need to make emotion the core, thought at one time to be a hand in hand concept. Krell’s created the sounds that were forgotten long ago by the radio, but not for anyone else’s need but his own. These are his ideas for how he thinks music should be furthered, and as it turns out these ideas might be the one’s music needs - well the damaged R&B scene at least. Screechy ambiance, unsettling static, bleeps, bloops and everything in between litter the majority of Love Remains yet there’s not been something so refreshing all year. Maybe it’s the aspiration and conviction that compels the affair. When he sings lines like, “I was hoping for the rain, I was hoping for you” one can’t help but hear not the words but the want in his voice. When’s the last time you heard someone speak/sing/scream and convey the emotion of a verb and not an adjective?

Tom Krell leads a double life. During the day, he's a research fellow currently translating a book of post-Kantian philosophy in Cologne, Germany. But after work he's making narcotized, below-fi R&B as How to Dress Well. In October of last year, Krell started posting batches of his clouded tunes to his blog. They're marked by his high voice, as piercing and fragile like the rest of this music.
