In the midst of a hot, hot summer (here in Florida), comes pop-rock aplenty spilling itself all over the place, and making itself wildly appropriate for the fun-loving season.  The surfaced simplicity of the genre is the perfect remedy for a less-than-perfect summer day.  Tapping into this formula is My Favorite Highway’s singer/guitarist David Cook (using a semi-original moniker iamdavidcook) with his solo-acoustic EP All is Fair in Love & War.

Not surprisingly, if you were to eliminate all electric instruments, and add an acoustic guitar, plus some very minor recording effects (thank you Reason) and you have the solo EP.  Formula for success?  Eh.  Not entirely.  However, there are many ladies who swoon for a man with an acoustic.  Brand New said it best; ladies are suckers for anything acoustic.  Musically, you’ll find simple acoustic rhythms, but that comes as no surprise.  If you’re expecting a young Mozart with a blonde-fohawk and a nice face, you won’t find him here.  On the contrary, what makes a great side-project shine is its lyrical-integrity and vocal delivery.  David can turn a phrase, and write some decent lyrics.

Unfortunately, the lyrical subject matter doesn’t vary much.  Cook sings about his romantic relationships.  “Echo” is his strongest output on the album on all fronts (musically, lyrically, and vocally).  “I’ll be your choice when you can’t decide, racing under traffic lights. I’m so glad you’re here tonight to cheat the fleeting time.” The other four tracks are simply mediocre.  There’s nothing much to make of this acoustic album, except these are songs that, I suppose, Cook didn’t feel were meant to appear on his full-time band’s discography.  It’s a decent EP, but I’d rather hear the songs played over a campfire on the beach than on a digital recording.
