2010 was an exciting year for the now four dudes that make up pop-punk outfit Man Overboard. After releasing their debut full-length to quite a bit of underground acclaim, the band made the decision to sign to Rise Records and plan out a slew of releases for the 2011 year. Considering the momentum the band has built off of Real Talk, you could easily say the ball is in their court for how big they will get in the next year. Thankfully, their first slated release The Absolute Worst is a smartly-penned continuation of what made Real Talk a hit – solid melodies, relatable lyricism and fun, memorable songwriting. Though it only packs in two more tracks for fans to add to the band’s ever-growing catalog, The Absolute Worst is a quick jolt of catchy pop-punk that is sure to help energize even the coldest winter nights.

If you are already familiar with the more pop than punk concoction that is Man Overboard, then The Absolute Worst is just another chapter in the story. The title track leads off with a MO-staple melody that is simple and effective in getting your head into the game. Solid drumming and crunchy guitars round things out for this track, as the lyrics flow smoothly over the addictive arrangements. Sure, Man Overboard isn’t penning a new age classic to sing over their brand of pop-punk, but this genre has always been about making something relatable. Still, the lyrics do have the potential to feel a bit cheesy depending on your mood or overall taste. The second track here is the climactic “I Saw Behemoth and It Ruled”, which culminates in a burst of melodies, bells and ‘whoa-ohs’ for an instantly memorable ending. Again, much more of the expected from the guys, as we get drawn in from the winding guitar melodies that open this song. Personally, this track sticks with me more than the title track, but each has their ups compared to the other.

Whether you’re just getting wind of Man Overboard or you are a die-hard defender of pop-punk, The Absolute Worst is a quick jolt of infectious energy that any fan of pop-punk (or pop) can enjoy. Consider this your tying over until Man Overboard kicks out their follow up full-length (hopefully) sometime later this year.
