There’s something strange going on with Max Bemis.  The brain child of Say Anything, the king of witty, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and references to mediocre television shows, is happy.  And not like “yay, I had a great time at the party!!!” happy, but literally happy.  What does that mean for his music?  Well, that depends on if you’re a Bemis fan boy or not, at least with his solo, tour-only record.  Max Bemis and the Painful Splits will either leave you jonesing for more, or numb with boredom.

Opener “Chlorine Bath” is an easy, upbeat listen, and you can tell that Bemis had a good time recording this song by the tone in his voice.  It’s an easy song to pick up on, and it’ll leave you singing along, with the simple lyrics of “I wanna wake up in the evening. / Shred my lips / bathe in chlorine. / Bless your heart you sad thing. / I don’t wanna be with you.”  “Former Punisher Gone Rogue” sees Bemis bringing back the angst that was found on Say Anything’s …Is A Real Boy.  However, after those two, things just sound bleak.  Obviously, the sound quality isn’t great, as Bemis recorded everything himself.  But sometimes, it’s just hard to hear what he’s singing, as is the case on “Assimilate All Bastards.”  “Do the Dohnk,” which features Mrs. Bemis, Sherri DuPree, has a weird vocal clash between the two that just hurts to listen to.

It pains me to rip Max Bemis like this.  However, this album is just boring and should be left for only the most hardcore Max Bemis fans.  It’s ok to be happy, but the angst that made Bemis stand out is missing.  Sure, the witty metaphors are still there, but they just don’t sound right when sung on top of an acoustic guitar.  The metaphors and wit should be left to Say Anything, and that’s where Max Bemis should focus all of his efforts as well.
