Mogwai are the veterans of Post-Rock; an instrumental giant, timeless and ageless in nature. With crescendos going on for days, like the mockingbird merrily chirping its signature tune on the branch of your beloved pine tree, these Western European juggernauts have enough creative components to run an inner-city arts academy. And they have the discography to prove it. Ranging from airy and atmospheric, to driving and distorted, Mogwai is just the band to keep a listener on their toes. With the affably titled "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will", it's more of the same.

The most enjoyable part of Mogwai is that the band works as one cohesive unit. There really is no stand-out element or a singular highlight to their art, it only works when every member makes the most of their contribution. The band is characterized for their fluent rhythm, and oft-evolving tempo changes. Each musician handles the time signatures with mass ease, and no lingering of an off note holding them hostage. "White Noise", the opener, is an airy and therapeautic collection of cathartic notes. The only thing to cut off, if anything at all, would be the distorted sample looping in the background, which seems to be a bit out of place. However, the wonderfully delayed guitar parts, and delicately balanced synth work side-by-side to overpower the only negative element.

When Mogwai tones it down, they are at their absolute best. The way they craft a slower track is ingenious. Tracks such as "Death Rays" and "Letters to the Metro" display the intricacy in place that allows the music to speak for itself. The fragile piano piece in "Letters" gives the feel of a blissful sunset on the beach. The musicianship is not complex by any means, but it's beautiful in its simplicity. The twangy guitar wanes and moans as if complaining that the daylight is leaving all-too-soon. In "Too Raging to Cheers", the synth makes another signature contribution to the melody in place, adding to the emphasis of the rhythm instruments already in play. These tracks are paradoxically epic in their contrary minimalism.

While the tempo is best served mellow, and Mogwai is surely at their finest in this regard to boot, the faster driving tracks are pretty solid in their own right. But just like Picasso made some paintings less eye-flattering than others, it didn't mean that his collection was any less stunning. This is no less true in the case of Mogwai's music. In the Post-Rock arena, they're famous for their range of distortion vs. clean delay. With "Hardcore" we find this range well and clear, as if a fictional battle between two like-minded foes.

Mogwai is a post-rock band from Glasgow formed in 1995 that has become one of the most influential and best known bands in its genre. They compose lengthy, mostly instrumental guitar-based pieces in the style of post-rock, usually focused around the elaboration of a single theme, and are known traditionally for their quiet/loud dynamic, defined bass riffs, and an eminent ambient sound, sometimes dark and sometimes grand. ... read more
