It's not easy to hit the ground running as a new band, but for MSWhite it came as second nature. From Turin, Italy, this group of musicians trekked across the ocean to tour in the United States, got signed to Rise Records, and have finished working on their debut album, Squares. Unlike most other metal outfits, this album doesn't seek to stand out via the use of awkward electronic synths or "progressive" melodies, but is simplistic and to the point. Though it has already been asserted countless times their resemblance to Underoath in musical style (and even invideography; see "I Breathe the Sun" the music video), MSWhite improves on the design, delivering all that was good about Underoath; their ability to deliver heavy music without losing emotion. Some might consider it plagiarism, but in the grand scheme of things, all artists have their influences. Virtually every musician borrows elements from past (and even contemporary) bands and artists to help shape their sound. For MSWhite to have followed the footsteps of UO is definitely not a bad sign, and it could be just what they need to stand out of the crowd of countless American bands.

What struck me most about this band, and this album, is its honesty. There are no gimmicks, no smokes or mirrors, no appearance of a band trying too hard to make appealing music. As a result, MSWhite create interesting guitar riffs and employ raw harsh vocals, provided by Andrea Acari. Where electronic effects are added, it is never to the point of abuse, and instead are a subtle element that adds to the music, instead of taking away from it. Both Luca Cavaglia (guitarist and clean vocals) andAcari don't speak of irregular lyrical topics, but unfortunately their interesting accents make the words hard to decipher. Upon a close listen, however, the listener will be rewarded with interesting and lofty lyrical lines, like in "Sinking Nowhere Over the Wisdom": "this is what links you with humans/ you can die tasting every step/ before crashing down again".

The selling point of this album is the handiwork of the guitars. Sometimes dissonant and in charge, and sometimes atmospheric, the guitar riffs are hardly repeated. Rarely can one come across a metal album so strong in emotion and almost completely devoid of generic breakdowns, but in this case, with each songMSWhite unveils another catchy melody. The opening bit for "Now I Can See Clear" consists of a delayed guitar riff, and switching between the Left and Right pan, creating an uptempo and amiable intro to the song. The interlude track "V.I.T.R.I.O.L." consists of a heavy and persistent drum beat, backed by melancholy guitar riffs, sliding back and forth to create a sort of 'limbo' in the middle of the album. As is a recent trend of albums, each song flows into the next, and yet each song retains its distinct characteristics.

Overall, everything from the production to the album flow served to make this album stick out like a sore thumb. MSWhite should be proud for having made Squares, a great first step in their career.

MSWHITE hails from Turin, Italy and is the current standout amidst the Italian underground music scene. Formed three years ago when mutual friends encouraged singer Andrea Arcari and drummer Paolo Canetti to team up, a brash and vibrant band was formed. Once guitarists Luca Cavaglià and Davide Neri Cagliero joined the fold, the band began working hard on writing songs and booking gigs.
