It was summer 2008, and emerging from the depths of the internet was Never Shout Never, the musical creation of Christofer Drew. His breakthrough Yippee EP saw Never Shout Never infiltrate the Myspace charts, amassing over 60 million plays. The buoyant, optimistic EP integrated ideally with the hopes, dreams, sights and sounds of summer, with its vivacious teen-pop sound, telling personable tales of teen happiness and angst.

It was 2009, and even greater things were expected. Having started the year with his Uke EP; a three track acoustic rendition of the same monotonous song, played three times back to back, many fans were left jaded and dissatisfied. Well, summer 2009 beholds even more excitement for artless, simple minded teenagers; another Never Shout Never release; the blandly titled Summer EP. This excitement escalates with the prospect of production from Hellogoodbye’s Forrest Kline.

The Summer EP recaptures the feeling of indifference and mediocrity created by the Uke EP. Yes - that same unvaried, lifeless sound, assembled with Drew’s corrupting, painfully prominent voice. Oh, and some shy instruments.

The truth is, everything about the Summer EP screams ‘simplicity’. Well, perhaps it sings it softly, rather than screaming. The EP begins with “Happy," a childish song which seizes the concepts of togetherness and happiness;

“You make me happy / whether you know it or not / we should be happy / that’s what I said from the start / I am so happy knowing that you are the one that I want for the rest of my days”

A jubilant ‘happy’ mood is quickly relinquished with “Hummingbird”, a lingering, dreary and flat song. Whilst not possessing the most thoughtful lyrics, a refreshing jubilant vocal approach, merged with rousing guitar work is heard in “I Just Laugh”, a song resembling material from the Yippee EP. A rather different song, “On The Brightside”, comes soon after. Incredibly, the song is not about girls or love, however the song continues to suffer the same lyrical malnutrition seen previous;

“Look on the bright side / you’re roughly six feet tall”

The Summer EP finally comes to it’s conclusion with "Losing It," one last outlet of the young Mr. Drew’s woes. The lyrics venture into unwanted territory;

"My hands were searching for her in the backseat of my car / I just lost it / and I can't believe it"

Please no. We can only hope that’s not what it seems.

The Summer EP falls short of expectations. Subsequent to his success with The Yippee EP, ‘big city dreams’ could have been expected. However, the stylistic path followed does little to showcase musical talent and variety, with the lyrical content strongly resembling the pen notes of a 15 year old girl. Who knows what summer 2010 may bring.
