It must really suck to be the members of Nocturnal Me. Well, not all of them. Frontman Dave Melillo has it good. But for drummer Mikey Lasaponara, guitarist Jeff Czum, and bassist John "Tank" Viavattine, living in the shadow of Melillo must get tiring. Especially when the most memorable part of the band’s lackluster debut EP was Melillo’s vocals. Well, life is getting better for Czum, Viavattine, and Lasaponara. With the release of their new EP - Too - Nocturnal Me, not just Dave Melillo, seem poised to shine.

Too, however short it may be, is a marked step in the right direction. With a run time of 17:35, the band delivers 4 new tracks of funk/R&B inspired pop, and a remix of “This Isn’t Love” that makes the original track quite superfluous. Opening the EP is “Second Chance,” and the funk influences are on display as soon as the track starts. Although most of the influence can be heard in the guitar work of Czum, listen closely to drummer Lasaponara, whose work on the kit pulls the song together, making the song a coherent, well articulated track. However, the downfall of the song lies in the vocals.  Dave Melillo can sing, and the use of autotune on his vocals is a complete turn off.  The track is still catchy, and draws you in right away with the opening line of “Arm to arm / hip to hip / when I dip, you dip, we dip.” Following “Second Chance” is “Every Other Time,” which lets Viavattine shine on the bass, featuring groovier, funk inspired bass lines that wouldn’t sound out of place on a 70’s Motown release.

With a band such as Nocturnal Me, formed out of the “destruction” of another, somewhat successful band, it can be difficult to achieve anything even marginally close to what the members once had. The biggest strength of the EP is that the band strives to distance themselves from the signature CIWWAF sound that was found on their self titled EP. Going with a more funk inspired sound was necessary for the band to mature, and mature they have. Although the lyrics still deal with heartbreak and not wanting to be alone, Nocturnal Me is still a young band still trying to find themselves.  Too is much more interesting than the self titled EP, but Nocturnal Me needs to watch their steps. No matter what they do, they’ll always draw comparisons to CIWWAF and Dave Melillo’s solo act. Breaking that mold won’t be easy, but it should be a fun ride.

(2009 - Present)

Dave Melillo, Jeff Czum, Mikey Lasaponara and John Viavantte are poised to consummate their artistic visions under the guise of Nocturnal Me. The band released an EP sans Viavantte in the December of 2009 which echoed a pop-rock style that Mellilo, Czum and Lasaponara had developed through previous projects. The band recently recorded 3 songs at the Hurley Studio's in Costa Mesa, CA which show a progression into a more aggressive, funk-tinged sound inspired by such bands as Incubus, Jamiroqui and Maroon 5.
