Over the course of their now three releases, Oceana has risen from a Rise scene bean to a respected, intelligent hardcore act, and have now toned their intensity down after a short-lived break-up to give a more intimate look at their abilities. While their career has been a chameleonic run, it's also been consistently evolving forcing the listener to stay on their toes and not expect the same tricks to plague each release. For only being four songs long, the Clean Head EP stands as its own pillar in Oceana's ever-changing progression as a band, filling the intimate gap needed to complete the array of soundscapes they've released in the past.

Straight from the opening chords, the guitar tone has a classic crunch to it, as opposed to an overdose of gain and some scooped mids. Each note is articulated to its finest degree with clarity and drive. "Blue" spends time in groovy guitar licks and a haunting, yet catchy melody. These haunting melodies continue through "Barracuda Capital Of The World" which starts slowly with Brennan Taulbee's unrefined vibrato croons for a bit which falls into another groovy, danceable beat and guitar lick.

The second two tracks carry the crunch of the previous two, but expand the sound to a more straight drive in comparison to the grooves presented in the previous tracks. The vocal lines, while not as catchy, soar a little more throughout "Wool Gold" and "Joy." The closer builds through an extended bridge leading into a rough, yet appropriate, harmonization and elongated phrasing to carry the end of the record to a nice close.

Proving their constant growth as a band, Clean Hand shows the next step in Oceana's catalog as another progression from the last, which really keeps the listeners on their toes. These gentlemen sure are good at always changing their minds on their tone, and then executing it perfectly.

At least two artists use the name Oceana:

1. Oceana is (as of November 3rd, 2009) a 4-piece post-hardcore band from St. Petersburg, Tampa, Florida that released 2 full length albums and an EP, entitled The Tide, BIRTH.EATER and Clean Head respectively. They announced they were disbanding 6/19/09, however as of November 3rd, 2009 they are back together with a changed line-up. They are currently unsigned.

The original members of Oceana had previously been in other local bands in the Tampa - St. Petersburg area, before finally gathering and forming Oceana in 2007.
