Chronicling the final epic battle between God and the devil, Oh, Sleeper's highly anticipated new album, Son Of The Morning, is a story of good, evil, and the spiritual struggles of humankind. Though, on the surface, the vocals may seem harsh, digging deeper into the album one will find the underlying message of hope, and good's eventual triumph over evil. So the story begins...

As with any concept album, depending on the listener, it takes a few listens to grasp the overall concept. With Son Of The Morning, the band spends little time on filler, bringing the concept and message as blunt as possible. The title track starts the album in a rather dark fashion. Speaking from the perspective of the devil, to God, Micah Kinard proclaims that “I will claim your thrown through all these cowards you call your sons,” essentially stating that he will soon make his rise through God's fallen children. Offering a retort, Shane Blay steps in as the “voice of God” belting the chorus “If you could see like me you'd see, you haven't won anything..it's by my grace you're breathing.”

The album continues with the telling of various stories of those previously mentioned fallen children through different points in their lives. It is through these stories that God reveals himself at different points in these people's lives, effectively creating an army of his own for the final battle with the devil. “The Finisher” brings the album to a close, acting as God's direct reply to “Son Of The Morning.” Armed with his new found followers, he offers a few final words to the devil: “From the armories the angels sing. You will fear them when they lift their wings. They will sing to a world reborn. They will sing as I cut of your horns.” The final line also plays into the album artwork which features a fractured pentagram, a symbol of God's triumph over Satan.

From an instrumental and vocal standpoint, all the aspects of Oh, Sleeper displayed on When I Am God are still present, but shine through with more precision and polish. The album is also the first to showcase new drummer Matt Davis, a near perfect replacement for Ryan Conley, who parted ways with the band in 2008 to pursue a career in the Navy.

With the release of Son Of The Morning, Oh, Sleeper find themselves at their prime releasing a truly groundbreaking album in the metalcore scene, presenting us with something of great substance and a deeper, wholesome message. So if you're looking one release to fully indulge yourself in this year, make it Son Of The Morning. Chalk another mark for Solid State Records.

Oh, Sleeper is a metalcore band from Ft. Worth, Texas signed to Solid State Records. Oh, Sleeper formed in April of 2006 after former members of short-lived rock band Terminal got together with former Between the Buried and Me guitarist Shane Blay. Eventually they found a vocalist in Micah Kinard and began practicing. As the 4 members began sledging through all the normal problems of a band start-up (no place to practice, no money and different schedules) the biggest obstacle was finding the last and final member. ... read more
