In today’s over saturated screamo scene, Rise has achieved a peculiar type of fame. Punk purists the world over decry the label for signing and supporting generic acts that are contributing the neon-tinged decay of the scene, while scene kids revere the label, worshiping it more than they worship the gospel of crunk preached by Brokencyde. From this label comes Orlando, FL’s Sleeping With Sirens, a band that, while conforming to the genre conventions that define a typical Rise release, manages to pull some tricks from under its sleeve.

While most songs on their debut record, With Ears To See and Eyes To Hear, can easily be defined by the standards of the ridiculously titled opener “If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn,” they also fail to measure up to said song. Clocking in at a steady 3:39, the song, which is the album’s first single, contains above average, high-pitched A Skylit Drive-style vocal delivery, below average screams, extremely clean production, and average musicianship. It is also the exception; extremely catchy, it keeps the listener interested throughout and is guaranteed to become an anthem for neon-clad kids everywhere. Thankfully, there are also songs that break from the standard screamo mold; unfortunately, they venture into sappy ballad territory. Again, the first ballad on the record, ”Let Love Bleed Red” serves as both the exception and the rule. It is the most well done ballad on the record, and features Aaron Marsh of Copeland (!) singing a verse. Unfortunately, the rest of the songs on the record, with exceptions of “The Bomb Dot Com V2.0” and “Don’t Fall Asleep At The Helm”, are terribly generic and nearly indistinguishable, whether they be a ballad or more fast-paced. However, all hope is not lost for the band. Throughout the record, the band shows a great amount of technical skill, which, if harvested properly, could help the band achieve greatness in the future.

Overall, With Ears To See and Eyes To Hear is very generic. Outside of a few notable tracks, the songs on the album are very similar sounding, and lack the diversity needed to be a memorable album. However, hope is still alive. The band members, though young, clearly are skilled with their respective instruments. Only time will tell if they can harvest this talent and turn their music into something great.
