The Acacia Strain certainly have a point to prove with Wormwood. It's a little unclear what that point is as the band rely on the hammer concept beating the life out you until you accept or reject their offering. This isn't a surprise however, The Acacia Strain wander the realm of this generations nu-metal a. k. a. deathcore. A fair comparison as the same ethics litter the scene planted some fifteen years ago. Deathcore has thus far produced nothing inventive nor anything praiseworthy; it's a genre that is notorious for its repetitious breakdowns and often cringe worthy lyrics. Wormwood is no exception.

Wormwood has one idea and with that one idea comes eleven tracks with no variation. A sum of the experience would go something like, "You hurt me, I hate you, Your life is worthless, I really hurt" rinse and repeat. And believe you me, they take the repeat part dead serious, because as lead singer Vincent Bennett puts it, "When you're dead, you're done, you're dead, you die...". With well over 100 breakdowns plaguing Wormwood it's never given a chance to breathe. It's nay impossible to credit any musical skill to the musicians as each song delivers the same half tempo groove revolving around the two or three riffs deathcore claims in its arsenal. Of course the problems don't end there. As frustrating as it is to hear the same palm muted riff second after second, Vincent Bennett insists on keeping his monotonous tone the entire forty-seven minutes. This is exemplified every time he screams/yells/growls/chokes, and in helping with the cause they've layered six other Vincent's to accentuate all the breakdowns; in retrospect this houses 95% of Wormwood.

In fear of sounding redundant, a subtlety The Acacia Strain refuse to exude, it should be noted that one could listen to album opener "Beast" and be conscious of the rest album. The lack of variation, the insistent nature of repeated A# chords to over fertilize the album with breakdowns, all coupled with the fact that Wormwood is the same album The Acacia Strain have been creating since 2002 and it's impossible to see the appeal with this release.

The Acacia Strain is a metalcore/deathcore band from Chicopee, Massachusetts, US that formed in 2001. The band have since undergone numerous changes in their lineup. To date, they've released five studio albums, as well as two split albums. The Acacia Strain have said they dislike genre labels and instead describe themselves as "heavy." "You might hear other music that sounds like it, but those bands can't touch what we have. We have heart. ... read more
