If you disliked Fast Times At Barrington High, you should probably stop reading now.

Since rising from their 2004 roots, The Academy Is… have always been a subject of interest. As a major powerhouse in the pop-rock scene, they’ve managed to release three full lengths; each different to the last. Their latest effort – 2008’s Fast Times At Barrington High, attracted conflicting opinions, gaining criticism for its high school themed dime-a-dozen pop route, which estranged fans of their previous efforts Almost Here and Santi. So when the Illinois 5-piece abruptly announced their latest EP; Lost In Pacific Time, was almost here - only a week in advance, mixed feelings arose. Would they recoup attention or were they down and out?

With hooks about pulling stars down from heavens, it’s easy to distinguish which path The Academy Is… have opted for. The opening track “I’m Yours Tonight” sounds like “About A Girl”, with its clichéd, idealistic lyrics depicting dreamy romance, and glossy production is predictably present. No “rock” here, just pop. “Days Like Masquerades” continues in the same vein of uninspiring bright melodies, with vocalist Beckett’s voice sailing a sea of impressive vocal pitches, before the song gloomily succumbs to “woah”s. Next up is “Sputter” – a collaboration with Andrew McMahon of Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin fame, although his presence is unfortunately scarce. The song is a tame four-minute rendition, and its reassuring melodies and bland vocals make you feel like you’ve heard the whole song after only a minute. It’s too boring for a movie soundtrack, but too youthful for your parents’ playlist. There isn’t much to say about “New York (Saint In The City)” and closer “In The Rearview” that hasn’t already been said in some way, shape or form; the songs resonate a general boredom with fatigued melodies and slick production. Eh.

Sadly, The Academy Is… have released a mediocre and uninspiring EP, seemingly comprised of Fast Times… cuts. The raw energy and spirit exhibited on songs such as “Slow Down” and “Same Blood” has gone astray, paving the way for pedestrian pop. Everything we had is no longer there.

Frontman William Beckett and guitarist Michael Carden grew up in rivaling bands in the local Chicago music scene. Beckett eventually ended his short-lived solo project Remember Maine, wanting to take music more seriously and looking for someone who shared his passion. When Carden's band broke up, the two gradually found themselves talking more and more, engulfed in deep conversations about music. After realizing they were very much alike, they decided to try their hand at writing songs together and The Academy was born.
