Las Vegas – ‘The Entertainment Capital of the World’, has been an appealing source of entertainment for decades; classy shopping, lavish dining, luxury casinos, electrifying television.. oh, and The Cab’s Fueled By Ramen debut Whisper War.

Vegas’s latest offering arrives little over a year after ‘that’ critically acclaimed debut, with the Vegas-themed Lady Luck EP. Comprised of two collaborations, two b-sides, a cover, and an acoustic version, Lady Luck intends to retain and maintain interest following Whisper War.

The makeshift nature of the EP causes a dispersed, irregular sound in terms of production, with some songs typifying Whisper War, whereas others resonate a different, softer side to The Cab, and some just sound painfully overproduced.

Glancing at the track listing for Lady Luck, the opening track – a ‘remix’ of one of Whisper War’s hits; “Take My Hand,” appears most appealing, due to guest vocals by Cassadee Pope from fellow Decaydance power-pop act Hey Monday. The reality is different; a bland rendition, with Pope’s vocals adding nothing to the song, and the blatant overproduction makes the song incredibly tedious and hence boring. Immediately after is another collaboration, this time with Rhode Island hip-hop artist Eloquent, who lends a few verses of rapping into an already overproduced, artificial song. A complete departure from the elegant, soul-driven pop sound on Whisper War. It seems many of Decaydance artists are confused with musical direction at the moment…

Lady Luck continues with the glamorous "Diamonds Are Forever (And Forever Is A Mighty Long Time)." Originally a b-side from Whisper War, the song brings back familiar territory, yet sounds completely out of place after the previous two songs. Further glimpses of Whisper War are heard with the ’strings’ version of the infamous ‘I’ll Run’. A calm, controlled song, showing vocalist Alex DeLeon can sing without vocal effects. I’m not usually a fan of acoustic versions of song, yet I enjoyed this effort. Highlight.

Lady Luck closes with The Cab taking a gamble and venturing out of their comfort zone with an unusual cover; Queen’s 1984 classic “I Want To Break Free.” The cover is allocated The Cab’s soul vibe, but sounds boring, with the vocals doing little to excite. The EP closes with ‘Lights’, a new song, which does little to be noticed.

The Cab fall slightly short of their high standards on Lady Luck. It seems like releasing music for the sake of releasing music. However, it is sure to provide some entertainment, hold fans over, and keep The Cab in the spotlight. That’s the idea, right?
