Being unaware of this indie-pop duo, or at least their breakout hit “Beauty In The Breakdown,” is almost a sin. Having released 2 full-lengths (well, 1 and a re-release), an EP, and touring extensively across the states, The Scene Aesthetic are firmly planted with their upbeat, tween adored ditties. Their latest offering, Brother, takes on an even fuller sound and slices their approach in two: upbeat and exciting or slower and elegant. If Brother were a pie, it would be two distinct, delicious flavors, but even so, not all that interesting.

The first six tracks of the record focus on a more upbeat feel, sans “Humans.” Standing out is “Never Gonna Let This Go” with it’s staccato guitar lick and lines like “Every time I kiss her I just wanna go and kiss her again and again and again. Get to the next one before the first even ends.” It’s cute, straight up. Teenage girls will swoon in an instant. Expect the same love-laden concepts on just about the entire record, but that is to be expected. There’s solid implementation of a fuzzy, rockin’ guitar on “My Humility, You Are,” which was a nice surprise.

What tears the long-time TSA fan apart is the now 5th release of “Beauty In The Breakdown” (for those counting, twice on Building Homes, twice on the self-titled, and now once on Brother). This time, it’s an even fuller sound with an extended bridge and ending with keys and some really cheesy “ooo’s.” It’s almost a shame at this point what has happened to the perfectly executed, first attempt back in 2006 with one acoustic guitar and two angelic voices.

As the second half begins with “Lonely Girl,” which features Cary Brothers of Garden State soundtrack fame, the entire mood slows to a quiet serenity. The chorus’s hold elongated melodies and the musicianship is deeper. It’s a much more mature tone for the duo. It’s takes on a more alternative and soft rock feel with light pianos and crooning vocal lines. “Landon’s Summer Diary” employs some electro-pop programming and “Walk This Town” closes the record on a positive vibe singing, “everyone will come knocking down our dreams, but we won't let them.”

Branching out is inevitable for every musician as they continue writing, and it has to be embraced to a point. For The Scene Aesthetic, that comes with listening to Brother as they expand their sound. The days of two kids and an acoustic guitar are over and its time to accept that. They’re grasping at new concepts and musicianship, and this record is a great first step in that direction.

The Scene Aesthetic is a 2-piece acoustic band from Everett, Washington that formed in January 2005. Their music consists of distinctively emotional lyrics with acoustic work somewhat reminiscent of Dashboard Confessional while still being noticeably original.

Their first single, "Beauty in the Breakdown", achieved instant success on Myspace and PureVolume. Members Andrew de Torres and Eric Bowley continued to compose songs and released their first album, Building Homes From What We've Known, on April 11, 2006.
