Irish pop/rockers The Script aren't exactly feeling the respect right now, and it's about to get a lot worse. Their 2008 debut self-titled album spawned an impressive 5 hit singles in the United Kingdom, reached the Top 10 in 4 countries (Ireland, Australia, the UK, and Sweden), and was, overall, a successful venture into the world of the early 00s. Back when Jason Mraz was first making it big, he probably didn't envision his vocal stylings being used on the sniffle-this-is-a-song-about-bad-things-happening-to-good-people hit "We Cry," and when Coldplay made "The Scientist," they probably didn't know it would be reincarnated in the form of "The Man Who Can't Be Moved." Oh, and I have a message for The Script: hey guys...The Fray called...they want their melodies back.

In other words, The Script borrowed from a lot of bands. But hell, it worked. The Script is easy to listen to, unoffensive to its core, and rather...pretty. So in 2010, their fans were hoping for another hit album, and well, they got it. Science & Faith debuted at #1 in Ireland and in Australia, and very well could in the UK too. But instead of an album full of interesting takes on the last decade of pop/rock, Science & Faith is a bland compilation containing not one exceptional piece of music.

A brief 10 tracks, the album still manages to top 42 minutes...and that extra 45 seconds on each song is apparent. It was annoying enough when "Before the Worst" or "Fall for Anything" dragged on too long, but at least their choruses were minorly interesting after being repeated 6 times. Not so on Science & Faith. Gone is the unbalanced percussion of "We Cry;" gone is the melancholy guitar that begins "Breakeven." Where The Script varied its sound from moment to the next, Science & Faith keeps the same musical tones throughout the album. There is little variation from song to song; there is even less from verse to chorus.

"You Won't Feel a Thing," "For the First Time," and "Nothing," the album's first 3 tracks, fly by without a interesting note. All of the songs seem to be about random Irish teenagers, and frankly, none of their stories are all that engaging. "Science & Faith" features even more deplorable lyrics: "you won't find faith or hope down a telescope," Danny O'Donoghue sings in a corny attempt to compare the intangibles of love with the intangibles of religion. It just comes across as a bad Christian Rock song.

Honestly, if it didn't sound like The Script were actually trying, I'd simply assume that they were raising a giant middle finger to their record label, saying, "here, try to market THIS shit." But no. Sadly, the band actually thinks featuring a spoken word/rap bridge on a song called "This = Love" makes passable pop/rock. I've got news for you, guys: mainstream music fans may be slow on the uptake, but they aren't stupid enough to fall for this. I actually enjoyed your debut album quite a bit; I won't listen to Science & Faith ever again.
