Almost three years have passed since The Sleeping released their highly successful sophomore effort, Questions & Answers. They are set to release their highly anticipated new album, What It Takes February 17th on Victory Records. Having broke new ground in the post-hardcore scene with their previous records, one might wonder if they were able to live up to their reputation of being a step ahead of other bands in their genre or, more importantly, if they were able to meet the expectations of their patient fans. All I can say is, breathe easy my friends, The Sleeping is back and they are better than ever.

What It Takes is definitely a step in the right direction, yet again showcasing the band's musical prowess (which they emulate live, flawlessly, I might add). The Sleeping is one of those bands that have showed obvious progression album after album while keeping that unique sound and passion for their music we have all come to love. Clearly evident from the start is the plethora of keys/synth, which were nearly nonexistent on any of their previous releases. Vocalist Douglas Robinson once again provides his trademark voice, and it's as vicious as ever. Standout tracks include, but definitely not limited to, "You'll Be A Corpse Before Your Time" which kicks off the album with the same ferocity, as the debut track "Don't Hold Back" from their previous effort, "Questions & Answers," as well as setting the mood for the rest of the album. "Running Fast" shows that The Sleeping aren't afraid to slow things down every once in awhile.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. I'm extremely interested to see where the band goes from here as I expect this album to surprise a lot of people, as well as attract new fans who hopefully, won't have to deal with another long wait for their next effort. Be sure to pick up What It Takes when it hits stores February 17th.

The Sleeping, consisting of a few of the original members of Long Island's now defunct metalcore group Skycamefalling, was formed after skycamefalling's last show at Hellfest '03. Living on after the legacy of SCF - Doug Robinson, Cameron Keym, Sal Mignano, and Joseph Zizzo continue to develop and write music that we now know and love.
With a drastic change from the hardcore scene, the Sleeping is now considered to be post-hardcore/rock/alternative, and has played with bands such as Halifax, Silverstein, Bayside, Stretch Armstrong, Spitalfield and Haste the Day.
