Pop punk isn’t exactly a genre known for its creativity. With thousands of mediocre bands vying for the attention from teenage girls and guys who want to impress them, it can be hard to find a band truly worth listening to. Enter Thieves and Villains. Their guitarist is ten times as talented as most who play in a pop punk band, the drummer gets the job done and the bassist isn’t afraid to be loud. The band’s latest effort, South America, is a solid and thoroughly entertaining affair, and it’s a shame they don’t get more attention amongst the hordes of pedestrian pop punk bands dominating the airwaves.

Most of what makes up South America, and Thieves and Villains’ overall sound may be more indicative of pop or indie rock, but vocalist Sergio Otaegui will remind the listener of a Tom Delonge-Brandon Urie hybrid. The slower song structures, unique instrumentation and less immature lyrics make this album a great starting place for the heartbroken teenage girl, or anyone else who’s making the transition from listening to pop punk to listening to modern indie rock. The heartfelt rhythms of “Song For Dean Moriarty” and “Virginia Woolf” impress and the more pop punk-sounding songs like “I Want a Friend Like You” are just plain fun.

“Island Waterfall Blues” is perhaps the best and most beautiful song of the whole album, and combines both directions whilst slowing it down a bit, and “Central Park” features the best riffs and chorus of the album. Almost all of the songs here fall under the three minute mark, which makes South America all the more a fun and easily accessible release. The other songs on the record bring much of the same, but it still sounds as consistently great and new as ever, something that’s a problem for most pop punk/indie bands, but hardly even an afterthought for Thieves and Villains. The atmosphere created by the instruments and Otaegui’s emotive voice come together and solves that problem quite effectively.

If you like fun and creative, thoughtful and intelligent music, look no further than South America. Thieves and Villains bring a new edge to pop punk and indie music and eight to nine times out of ten, make it work quite well. South America isn’t quite the journey of an album it could have been, but the results are thoughtful and convincing enough to be more than satisfying to the listener. There are hundreds of sentences more one could use to describe this album, but I’ll condense it down to one word; refreshing.
