Ever feel the need to tickle your post-hardcore funny bone? Well look no further, as Trophy Scars have continually made it their priority to satisfy your need. Yes, axes grind away and a sweaty frontman howls his brains out but rather than sounding flagrant or boring as many of their peers do, they've seemingly perfected the art of injecting just the right amount of charisma into their sound. Enough so that they seem interesting and they have some defining quirks but not so much that their attempts at sounding ridiculously creative instead come across as ridiculously stupid.

To continue this trend, they've made it a focal point on their latest EP, Darkness, Oh Hell, a release which draws many a resemblance to Trophy Scars's Hospital Music for the Aesthetics in Language, as both are wild slices of post-hardcore pie that establish the band's niche with trial and error along the way. As with Hospital Music, Darkness finds itself exploring discord and some experimental melodies, but the transition between the two disparate elements suffers from incoherency and meandrous song structures. Luckily for the listeners, Trophy Scars has churned out another release where the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.

That's mostly because Trophy Scars can lock into a comfortable groove or some steadfast riffage paired with some zany vocal acrobatics. And oftentimes they know just when to move out of it and into another. But as I said, the problem is that their songwriting is still sub-par. Oftentimes their tracks lose momentum because the band seemingly can't restrain themselves from packing them with tons of ideas - in an illogical order no less. Sure, it's unexpected at times when a whirlwind of harsh riffs suddenly do a 180 and channel blues via guitar riffs or delicate strumming, but rarely does it contribute to a cohesive whole. Luckily, this is really the only discernible flaw that hinders Trophy Scars from living up to what they intend to be: a fun, extroverted post-hardcore band with plenty of personality to go around. The jumpy discordance only occasionally works its way in, so in a sense it's a small gripe that doesn't make it embarrassing or even mediocre. It's a flawed but worthwhile listen whose short length is sure to make it sit in constant rotation for many a post-hardcore fan. Especially if you're looking for some other howling frontman to almost replace Johnny Whitney's place in your heart.

The band was formed by Jerry Jones (vocals), John Ferrara (guitar), Mike Schipper (guitar) and Joshua Z Weinstein (bass) in 2002. Brian Ferrara (drums) was filling-in for Trophy Scars at the time; he was only twelve years old. Soon after, Brian was added as the permanent drummer. Trophy Scars utilizes a wide variety of musical genres and non-traditional song structures in their sound. Influences have been said to range from The Beatles to Aesop Rock, from Converge to Tom Waits. ... read more
