Yet another highly-anticipated Weezer album leaves fans unsatisfied. Every time a new release is announced, fans ready themselves for something new, something more mature, and something to keep the Weezer love alive, but as each record fails to do so, the legacy of Blue Album and Pinkerton lives on. Weezer is lucky that they will always have solid albums to fall back on, or their following would be dead at this point. All that needs to be said of Hurley is, Weezer, please grow up. With a wife and children, Rivers Cuomo should no longer to be worried about getting his sex fill or finding someone to “dream of all night long.” No one wants Weezer to lose their quirkiness or wacky lyrics, but you would think that after all these years the context would change a little. It is just a bit weird to hear high-school themed lyrics from men in their thirties. The days of being “trainwrecks” should be over, and the days of raising those little devils in full swing. Weezer will never be forgotten, but their legacy will not live on through their work in this millennium.

The main problem Weezer is having has nothing to do with the lyrics or the musicality or anything on the technical side of things. They have remained true to their style and been themselves, which is great and commendable, but their work is no longer as addicting and powerful because it is no longer believable. Their adolescence is gone, and they have grown up, so their lyrics should follow suit. They are merely playing music to play and make money at this point, which is not satisfying enough for true fans and music lovers. Their age should not be hindering them musically, but inspiring them more with their new experiences and attitudes. Hurley is not a bad album and is very true to classic Weezer, but it is not honest, and that is why it will not be appreciated.

Beyond the immaturity that engulfs this album, there are a few standout tracks that give the band hope. “Unspoken” is one of the most profound songs Weezer has ever released, as it has so much depth compared to the other tracks on the album and describes something that they actually care about. It is nice to see a more serious side of Weezer. On the other hand, tracks like “Smart Girls” and “Memories” fall short lyrically. Again, “where did all these smart girls come from, I don’t think that I can choose just one” are the words of an adolescent boy, not a grown man. The fact is, this is Weezer, and nothing more can be expected.

Hurley is not a failed album. It is an average Weezer album that is quirky, upbeat, and easy to listen to and understand. The band has so much more potential to grow and expand their fan base and music experience, but the world has to accept Weezer as they are, because there is no change in sight.
