Awake, Zao's 2009 release starts off with an intro track that calmly takes you into the beginning with nothing really significant standing out. "Entropica" carries out along the same lines initially, after getting across a little redundancy the band opens up a little bit into their song writing. The melodies really begin to stand out through the end of this track and moving into "The Eyes Behind The Throne." After getting across the first breadth of the album, one thing that really stands out is how well the album mastery has been completed. The timing of the musicians in order seems to take the dissonance out of a generally dissonant genre.

"Human Cattle Masses Marching Forward" helps this the album seem to take a musical turn from the standard metal and metal core classifications, and move towards the ever-growing sludge and post-metal forms of the associated genre. Harmonies between the vocals and guitar really carry the album and specifically the type of song "Romance Of The Southern Spirit" falls under. "What Will You Find", finds the tempo starting to pick up and moves into a more classic metal genre. When the album moves to the self-titled track, the choral guitar work simply makes that song stand out above the rest.

The first part of "Quiet Passenger" finalizes the body of the album, summarizing it well, and sending it into the album's conclusion. As the album seems to take a break in Revel, it seems to do-so in quite the right place, revealing a constant morphing breakdown. In the second part of "Quiet Passenger" it ends the album by collectively carrying out the harmonies and rhythmic riffs in a manner befitting the bands history. All in all, the album makes a good impression for Zao's current collection line-up.

There are at least three bands called ZAO:

1) The American Zao’s storied career was documented on the two-disc “The Lesser Lights Of Heaven” DVD and the luminaries of today’s heavy music scene are well aware of their debt to the band. Underoath and Unearth opened for Zao. Thrice and Fall Out Boy listened to Zao while growing up. As I Lay Dying invited Dan Weyandt to guest on their album Shadows Are Security (He performed guest vocals on Control Is Dead) and Matt Heafy from Trivium joined the band onstage to perform “Praise The War Machine.”
