We recently had the opportunity to talk to A Change Of Pace's vocalist, Micah Bentley,
about transitions the band has gone through, their follow-up album to Prepare The Masses,
and the future of A Change Of Pace. Here's what he had to say...
Maria@RRR: Thanks for taking time to do this interview. Can you please state your name and your position in the band?
Michah Bentley: Of course, my name is Micah and I am the singer.
Maria@RRR: It seemed like after changing singers in 2008, updates about A Change Of Pace were kept to a minimum. Catch us up on what’s been happening the past 2 years with the band.
Michah Bentley: Since I've joined our number one goal has been to put out a new record. It took months upon months of writing together to get a feel for what we wanted it to be. We did a few tours as well but our main goal was writing. We went and demoed a bunch in Los Angeles with various producers. At the end of last year we had written like 80 or so songs and finally felt like we had the songs we wanted for the record. Then we went and made it!
Maria@RRR: During this time, was there ever thoughts of ending the band? And if so, what made the band want to continue on?
Michah Bentley: You know, the last few years have not been easy. We've dealt with watching things that were supposed to happen fall through over and over. It took our obvious undying love for what we do to press on. We took some time off of touring for a while to write. There's always gonna be some doubt when things aren't going how you want. But I can definitely say it's made us stronger individuals for this business and a stronger band. I think that we've made it through some times that a lot of bands wouldn't survive. When we succeed we will have a lot more appreciation for it.
Maria@RRR: What was the reasoning for parting ways with former vocalist Torry Jasper?
Michah Bentley: Torry's an awesome dude. I've been friends with him for quite some time and I didn't deal with him as band member first hand but from what I gathered he did not have any drive. That's a necessary quality to have in this business. The band and myself are on good terms with him now though.
Maria@RRR: The band was previously signed to Immortal Records, but now are listed as “unsigned.” What happened with the label?
Michah Bentley: Immortal went under so that caused us to be without a label.
Maria@RRR: Would you ever consider signing again?
Michah Bentley: It all depends on the deal.
Maria@RRR: So will you be releasing your new album independently?
Michah Bentley: That is to be announced haha
Maria@RRR: Speaking of your new album, how was the writing process for it? And the recording process?
Michah Bentley: We never just accepted anything. It could always be better which led to rewriting songs over and over and having around 80 to choose from when it came time for the record. A lot of the struggles of the past few years went into these songs. We finally felt confident in the songs we had late last year, demoed them in December and went and recorded it in January. The recording process went incredibly smooth.
Maria@RRR: How do you feel the new songs sound in comparison to your older material?
Michah Bentley: It's a matured sound for us but it's still just as rock driven. We took a lot more time on this record, so we were able to put more into it.
Maria@RRR: Do you have a name for the new album yet?
Michah Bentley: It's pending.
Maria@RRR: Do you have any crazy tour stories you’d like to share?
Michah Bentley: Hmmm, every day on tour is a ridiculous adventure but off the top of my head one night we were conquering an 800 mile drive through the midwest somewhere and at like 4 am and we literally watched like 3 tornados form around us. I felt like we were in that show Storm Chasers.
Maria@RRR: What does the future hold in store for A Change Of Pace?
Michah Bentley: There are absolutely some very big things in store, the main one being this new record that we can't wait to show everyone.
Maria@RRR: Thanks again for doing this interview. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Michah Bentley: Just that we have the most incredible fans that have stuck with this band through a lot and they are going to get the album they deserve very soon. Our fans are everything to us. Can't wait to be back on tour and see them all!
