We recently had the opportunity to talk to Silverstein drummer Paul Koehler about Silverstein's upcoming live DVD, writing new songs, and advice they would give to budding bands. He's what he had to say...
Maria@RRR: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. Could you please state your name and your position in the band?
Paul Koehler: Paul, I play drums for Silverstein.
Maria@RRR: You released your live DVD/CD “DECADE: Live at the El Mocambo,” what made you want to release this DVD/CD?
Paul Koehler: We planned this special 4-day event in Toronto where we were going to perform every song we've ever written. We thought it would be the perfect opportunity to capture a live show for a release to our fans. It turned out real well and we're happy we did.
Maria@RRR: So the band is currently writing new material. How has the writing process been for these new songs?
Paul Koehler: It's about 75% complete for a new studio album, we're stoked.
Maria@RRR: How are these new songs sounding when compared to previous material?
Paul Koehler: It feels heavier than our anything we've done, but still with elements you would expect from one of our albums.
Maria@RRR: Do you ever feel pressure in having to “one-up” your previous releases when recording for a new album?
Paul Koehler: We try to take a different approach with each record to separate their likeliness and allow us to differentiate without pressure. Our last album was a strict concept record (lyrically, musically, and artistically) which was a completely different process. The record before was a more stripped down 'rock' record. This time, we're looking to hit our fans with something they wouldn't expect, and with that you're hoping just to make a good solid record.
Maria@RRR: What changes in the music scene have you seen over the past 10 years that you liked and disliked?
Paul Koehler: The biggest changes came with the internet and social networking. It has allowed music to be shared quickly and easily - not only to serve fans but to also inspire other musicians. It's created more rapid development in the music scene, but at the same time, has allowed for a lot of musicians to release music that might not be ready.
Maria@RRR: What’s you’re favorite memory you have with the band?
Paul Koehler: There are so many, and every day we're creating new milestones. However, I think leaving our continent for the first time really stands out. At the time, we never expected that we could take our music that far away but we finally did it.
Maria@RRR: What advice would you give up & coming bands?
Paul Koehler: Work hard on music, and rehearse a lot. You can have the coolest myspace page, and sharp promo photos, but if you can't play well crafted songs, it won't hold up over time.
Maria@RRR: What are your upcoming plans after the Scream It Like You Mean It Tour?
Paul Koehler: We'll be making a new album, and the touring again!
Maria@RRR: Since you’ve been on the road for so long, you must have a crazy tour story you could share with us.
Paul Koehler: Ah man, this is always a tough question... I don't know!
Maria@RRR: Thanks again for doing this interview. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Paul Koehler: Come see us on the Scream It Tour, pick up DECADE dvd/cd, then get excited for our new untitled album! www.silversteinmusic.com
