Touché Amoré has been quite busy this year. Recently, they released a split with friends and No Sleep Records band La Dispute titled Searching For A Pulse/The Worth Of The World. Additionally, they have another split with Make Do And Mend that will be released soon. To top it all off, they will be starting the fall with a tour with Envy, Trash Talk and the aforementioned La Dispute. Through e-mail, vocalist Jeremy Bolm graciously answered a few questions for us. Here is what went down:
Jerry@RRR: Thanks for taking the time out of your busy day to do this interview. Can you please introduce yourself?
Jeremy Bolm: Sure, my name is Jeremy Bolm.
Jerry@RRR: Recently, you released the split Searching For A Pulse/The Worth Of The World with No Sleep labelmates La Dispute. How did you decide do a split?
Jeremy Bolm: The first time La Dispute and TA played a show together we instantly bonded. The idea of a split was pretty sudden but true details weren’t worked out till much later. Jordan from LD and I discussed details while playing a show together in Chicago back in Fall of last year.
Jerry@RRR: Guide us through the writing and recording process.
Jeremy Bolm: We wrote our songs pretty quickly after that long tour. We were anxious to work on new material and those two songs flew out of us in a short time. I wrote lyrics with Jordan in mind for delivery. He nailed it even better than I imagined. We recorded the music in our practice space and I recorded vocals in Harlem, NY alongside Jordan in the Spring of this year.
Jerry@RRR: You entitled your side of the split Searching For A Pulse. Why did you do so?
Jeremy Bolm: It’s taken from a line in the first track. Jordan came up with the title by splicing a line from our side and a line from theirs.
Jerry@RRR: What was your inspiration for the lyrics of your tracks?
Jeremy Bolm: My behavior and how it’s continued to affect me.
Jerry@RRR: One interesting aspect of the split is the guest appearances by each band’s vocalist. How did the idea of doing so come about?
Jeremy Bolm: We wanted to make the split different than most that come out. To display the true bond our two bands had and do our best at making it interesting.
Jerry@RRR: Your last full-length was …To The Beat Of A Dead Horse, which was released in 2009. Do you have plans for a follow-up?
Jeremy Bolm: Yes, we started writing and the goal is to have a new album out by Spring 2011.
Jerry@RRR: A tour with Touché Amoré and La Dispute was just announced. Are you excited for the tour?
Jeremy Bolm: Absolutely.
Jerry@RRR: How did the idea of this tour come about? Was it due to the amiable relationship between the bands?
Jeremy Bolm: It was coincidence. Both of our bands will be supporting the incredible band Envy. We are on the entire tour with La Dispute joining on the second half. They are replacing Trash Talk who is on the first.
Jerry@RRR: Touché Amoré is often placed in the post-hardcore genre. What are your thoughts on the state of the genre? Does it ever bother you that the genre is associated with bands that use screams and heavy music as a gimmick and a quick claim to fame?
Jeremy Bolm: I think the post-hardcore game is at an all time high. When people use anything as a gimmick it normally doesn’t have longevity, so I’d rather stick to what I know and like than worry about that stuff.
Jerry@RRR: To someone who has never heard your music before, how would you describe your sound?
Jeremy Bolm: Punk/Hardcore influenced by 90’s Screamo. We try to capture an honest balance of melody and aggression in songs that are normally under 2 minutes.
Jerry@RRR: The band was a part of the Sound And Fury Festival 2010. Obviously, there was a huge incident that occurred. Can you provide your personal account on the situation? Where were you when the pandemonium broke out? Guide us through the day’s events from your perspective.
Jeremy Bolm: I was eating a delicious meal at Chipotle so I missed all the ignorance. All I know is hearsay and the whole thing was a disappointment. If somebody doesn’t know the story, it can be cliff-noted into: A joke that got out of hand that resulted in poor response on both the audience side and the security side.
Jerry@RRR: What are some goals you hope to accomplish before the end of the year?
Jeremy Bolm: Touring Europe/UK and getting our new record written.
Jerry@RRR: Do fans have something to look forward to in the near future?
Jeremy Bolm: New material and more touring.
Jerry@RRR: We are out of questions! Thank you again! Would you like to add anything else?
Jeremy Bolm: Keep your friends close. Thanks.
